Before you can get a website there are some basic things you need first, such as a domain name and a hosting company. The domain name is “a unique name that identifies a website.” (Techterms.com, 2020), in other words an address for your website on the internet. This is important because this is how people will find your website on the internet. Every year you need to renew this address as a sign the address is occupied, otherwise it goes back onto the market. When you have an address for your website you need somewhere to house your website files. This housing of your files is known as hosting because the files are being kept, or “hosted” on a server. Websites can be hosted on a personal server at someone’s home or you can get a hosting company to get your domain and keep your files for you. Hosting companies are an easy way to host your website because they will buy your domain name on your behalf, host your website and renew your domain name every year and all you have to do is pay them an annual or monthly fee. Have a look at my blog “How to Create a Hosting Company” to get an idea of what happens in a hosting company.
Once you have a domain and a Hosting Company you can start creating the website or getting someone to make it for you. If you want to create your own, keep your eye out for my WordPress series starting beginning of next year that will help you create a decent static or E-commerce site. However, if you want someone else to make the website for you there are some things you need to know. The first thing is that the website market is divided between two types of developers: high-end, interactive websites that require people who are skilled at coding, and the lower end, static or basic E-commerce sites that can be created through drag-and-drop programmes like WordPress. A well made WordPress website will be indistinguishable from a coded website except by professionals but at a fraction of the cost.
The second thing you need to think about is the safety of your domain name and files, because there are always a few people trying to take advantage of people who don’t know better. When you register your domain through a hosting company make sure that your domain is registered in YOUR name and NOT the person or company doing it on your behalf. I’ve heard of several cases where the business hires a developer who puts the domain name in the developers name and then steals the whole website asking for a ransom, or in the case of a friend, out of spite when they were caught billing clients without the business owners knowledge.
The third thing is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is what gets certain businesses onto the first page of Google, Firefox or any other search engine, and therefore one of the first businesses that a potential client will see when they type in keywords pertaining to your business. SEO is complicated and the rules change all the time, so it is worthwhile finding a website developer who is also familiar with SEO so that they can implement the “features” that the Website needs to be as SEO compliant as possible.
I have spoken about what you need from getting a domain name to implementing SEO on your website. Once you have all of this you should have a website that is getting traffic and possibly bringing you clients.
